What is SEO anyway?

These fast-talking web guys are always pushing SEO at you and you haven’t any idea what they are talking about….

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and just means that you are preparing your website in a way that is acceptable to the Google “bots” – spiders that crawl the web, gathering information.

SEO improves and promotes a website in order to increase the number of visitors the site receives from the Search Engines.  This can involve making the structure of the site easier for the Search Engine to understand, or it may be the words on a page, or the way other sites link to you on the internet.  And of course it includes making it better for people and making it Search Engine friendly.  Keywords will generate traffic for the site and you will build links to other sites to bring it all together.

SEO helps boost rankings so content will be placed where searchers will find it.

There is “On-Page” Optimization – specific ways of formatting your content
-    and “Off-Page”Optimization – linking your content to the web

On-Page Optimization requires  careful choice of domain name and keyword structure.
For Google to recognize what your site is about, it needs to receive signals in a certain pattern, so there is no confusion.  The basic structure is called a silo structure, with the keywords chosen using a keyword tool, for relevancy. (You also rank for broader keywords using this method.)
Internal linking helps to bind the structure further and lead the Google bots to the conclusion that you know what you are talking about.  This will lead to higher rankings in Google Search.

Off-Page Optimization is another complete structure, built outside of your webpage, which is used for back-linking.  This allows you to link to secondary or buffer accounts, which in turn link back to your site.  The buffer site protects your website from adverse conditions, Google algorithms and penalties (Penguin & Panda), while letting you take advantage of back-linking, giving you the power of the net in this second tier.

Combine this method with images, videos and  Social Media for Engagement and you will have authority for your website.
